The Southern Pine Beetle and Pine Forest Ecosystems
نویسنده
چکیده
Dendroctonus frontalis, the southern pine beetle (SPB), is a highly destructive species of bark beetle that inhabits pine forests in the southern United States and parts of Central America. @6D In natural pine forests, the ecological role of the SPB presumably is to hasten the demise of weak or damaged trees, perhaps creating kindling for fires that contribute positively to the long-term health of the forest ecosystem. In commercial forests and developed residential areas, SPBs are responsible for hundreds of millions of dollars in timber losses annually. Compounding the problem is the fact that the value of salvaged timber is reduced due to staining by a “blue-stain” fungus, one of several symbiotic organisms associated with the SPB.

Fire, Drought, Aind Forest Hlanageme,nt Iinfluences on Pine/hardwood Ecosystems in the Southern Appala'chiansl
Establishment and maintenance of pitch pine/hardwood ecosystems in the southern Appalachians depends on intense wildfiie. These ecosystems typically have a substantial evergreen shrub component (Kalmia latifolia) which limits regeneration of future overstory species. Wildfires provide microsite conditions conducive to pine regeneration and reduce Kalmia competition. R e c e n t d r o u g h t s ...
متن کاملNitrogen Cycling Responses to Mountain Pine Beetle Disturbance in a High Elevation Whitebark Pine Ecosystem
Ecological disturbances can significantly affect biogeochemical cycles in terrestrial ecosystems, but the biogeochemical consequences of the extensive mountain pine beetle outbreak in high elevation whitebark pine (WbP) (Pinus albicaulis) ecosystems of western North America have not been previously investigated. Mountain pine beetle attack has driven widespread WbP mortality, which could drive ...
متن کاملEffects of whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) restoration treatments on the distribution of bark beetle attacks
Whitebark pine is an important component of high elevation ecosystems in the western United States and Canada. Many wildlife species, including grizzly and black bears, squirrels, and birds, forage on the large, wingless seed. Whitebark pine relies heavily upon the Clark's nutcracker for seed dispersal and regeneration. Due to fire exclusion, white pine blister rust, and the mountain pine beetl...
متن کاملSilvicultural Considerations in Managing Southern Pine Stands in the Context of Southern Pine Beetle
Roughly 30 percent of the 200 million acres of forest land in the South supports stands dominated by southern pines. These are among the most productive forests in the nation. Adapted to disturbance, southern pines are relatively easy to manage with even-aged methods such as clearcutting and planting, or the seed tree and shelterwood methods with natural regeneration. In addition, most species ...
متن کاملEvaluating Satellite Imagery for Estimating Mountain Pine Beetle-Caused Lodgepole Pine Mortality: Current Status
Spatial accuracy in the detection and monitoring of mountain pine beetle populations is an important aspect of both forest research and management. Using ground-collected data, classification models to predict mountain pine beetle-caused lodgepole pine mortality were developed for Landsat TM, ETM+, and IKONOS imagery. Our results suggest that low-resolution imagery such as Landsat TM (30 m) is ...
